Brief Remarks by the Ambassador at the inauguration of Exhibition of Photographs of Ethnic Costumes

(2nd December 2015)

Dear Director of the Museum, Excellencies and Friends,

Let me congratulate the Director and the National Museum for organizing this event. This gives us an opportunity to display photographs of our ethnic costumes. You can see lot of photographs of sari, a costume of Indian women. The sari, has its origin in Indus Valley civilization. Thus this is almost a five thousand year old tradition, which India has preserved. India therefore is an example where ethnic costumes are part of every-day life.

May be this preservation of tradition is the reason, why Indian textile industry is growing at such a fast pace.

The colours, the fabrics and designs which are used in the costume reflect very refined tastes. This is a very serious art practiced by thousands and thousands of unknown artisans, preserving the ethnic designs and adding their own, making them public, without seeking copyright. These artisans, who most of the time stitch clothes with their own hands make the human beings more attractive, beautiful and handsome and thus making the world a more pleasant place.

I once again thank the museum for their initiative.
