Declaration of June 21 as 'International Day of Yoga' by the UN

"On 11th December 2014 the United Nations General Assembly in its 69th Session adopted June 21 as 'International Day of Yoga'. 177 nations co-sponsored the resolution which was brought by India. This was the highest number of co-sponsors for a resolution in the history of the United Nations. The adoption is a reflection of the pan-global appeal of India’s rich cultural heritage. Recognizing the importance of Yoga it was said by the speakers that yoga would not only promote health, but will support clarity of vision and action. The clarity could help prevent contradictions, which often generate confusion while making rules and promoting laws. Importance of Yoga lies in its long-term approach to enhance health. Prior to this, United Nations in 2007 had adopted India’s resolution to observe 2nd October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi as the International Day of Non-Violence. Taken together, the International Day of Non-Violence as well as the International Day of Yoga, uniquely highlights India’s contribution to the international community. The Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi thanked all 177 Nations across the world that co-sponsored the resolution. A Suo Motu Statement was made by the External Affairs Minister of India in Lok Sabha on 15th December 2014. The link to the statement is below:
